I wish there were more such people in India
PATNA: Former Bihar DGP D N Gautam on Sunday said that it might be a subject of research whether God exists or not, but corruption is definitely omnipresent. Gautam described corruption as a universal phenomenon and advocated for people’s active involvement to check it.
Addressing a seminar on `People’s Participation in Eradicating Corruption’ organized by the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), Gautam said that corruption was rampant at government level.
“A few powerful people have taken the government as hostage,” said Gautam, adding that society in general should boycott such people. “Don’t give any respect to corrupt people,” Gautam said.
RTI activist and social worker Parveen Amanullah, while highlighting corruption in various development schemes such as NREGA and PDS, stressed on devolution of power down to the Gram Sabhas for proper implementation of these schemes. However, she said that this devolution of power should not be done without fixing responsibilities. “Gram Sabhas should also be made accountable for its act,” Amanullah said.
Professor of economics, Patna University, Nawal Kishore Chowdhary said that corruption was inherent in every sphere of life, be it political, social or economical.
SDPI general secretary Umar Khan of Kolkata described RTI Act as an effective tool against corruption.
